I sometimes call this pizza sauce “lazy” because it’s super easy. It uses canned tomatoes, fresh onion, and some seasonings you likely hand on hand. This one is great for weeknight cooking, picky eaters, and meal prep/make ahead. One of my friends who is one of the pickiest eaters on the planet loves this sauce.

Homemade pizza is easy and fun to make. It’s a great way to use up random pieces of leftover bell pepper and onion, too. See my how-to for homemade pizza here. This sauce is a good dipping sauce for things like Stromboli or mozzarella sticks, too.

I use Good Seasons Italian Dressing Mix to make this sauce. If you have a selection of herbs and spices on hand, you can make your own instead of buying the packet. The Midnight Baker has a good recipe for Copycat Good Seasons Italian Dressing Mix. My original recipe for this sauce in 2017 used a McCormick seasoning blend in addition to the Good Seasons. That blend has since been discontinued, so I now make this with parsley, oregano, and basil. I also increased the amount of garlic from my original, since the seasoning blend I was using had garlic in it. If you have any all-purpose seasoning blends on hand, you can use 1 tablespoon of that – just make sure it’s salt-free or the sauce could end up too salty.

Don’t skip the simmering. It really does make a difference with the flavors because it helps the flavor profile develop.

This sauce can be made ahead to use later. It makes more than you’ll need for a single pizza. You can store it in the fridge for a few days, or longer on the freezer. When using from the fridge or freezer, warm and stir the sauce a bit before using it. I store this in 1.5 cup twist-top containers like these.
