When I need to pack a lunch for a horse show, clinic, trail ride, etc., I either have my everything planned in advance or I’m up until midnight making it. I’ve had generic turkey sandwiches and chips at shows since I was about 9 years old. Horse show lunches don’t have to be boring! There’s nothing wrong with a turkey sandwich, but there are a few recipes in this list that aren’t your standard turkey and cheese (see Turkey Avocado Sandwich With Chipotle Mayo by Neighbor Food Blog).
This post has all different kinds of sandwiches, wraps, and pinwheels. I like pinwheels in particular because they’re small, so they’re a bit easier to manage than a sandwich if you’re holding a horse (or sitting on one). I included a lot of meatless options for the vegetarians and vegans among us. There have also been several times when I’ve been on the verge of overheating at a show, and the idea of a meat-based protein is absolutely not appealing (and I’m a carnivore).
If you need ideas for sides, try this Dilly Pasta Salad, Grandma’s German Potato Salad, or Greek Yogurt Slaw. Cucumber Salad is also a nice light option without dairy or eggs.
I’m working on another list of snacks and breakfasts. I’ll update this post with links to those when I finish.
